Awards ceremony of the 12th edition of the Human Rights Film Festival of Barcelona. On December 10th, International Day
of the Human Rights, the Human Rights Film Festival of Barcelona, directed by Toni Navarro and organized by Derechos en Acción, an organization which promotes and educates on Human Rights, democratic development, and human sustainability, will celebrate the closing and awards ceremonies of its 12th edition, which will take place at 18.00 in Cinemes Girona in Barcelona.

The Human Rights Film Festival has been again one of the main platforms of this kind, aiming at dignifying and promoting the work of local and international filmmakers dealing with Human Rights after the important event at the Festival opening on November 26th with the national premiere of the film “Ayotzinapa, a State crime”, supported by the participation on a video call of the filmmakers and Javier Sicilia, a referent in Mexico leading a peace process for justice.

During 15 intense days, the Human Rights Film Festival has organized, once again, many different activities dealing with Human Rights. More than 140 films have been part of the official selection, of which 120 have been screened in Barcelona, while the rest were simultaneously screened in Paris and New York. More than 100 guests from all around the world have attended the festival, including filmmakers, crew members, artists, and speakers, who were invited to the screenings and the seven round tables held in Barcelona and parallel events.

On Thursday December 10th, commemorating the International Day of the Human Rights, we will celebrate the awards ceremony of the 12th edition of the the festival from 18.00 to 20.00 in Cinemes Girona in Barcelona.

Due to the 40th anniversary of the death of the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, the Festival has given special attention to films dealing with the victims and missing people of the Franco era. The Festival wanted to give recognition to the efforts still being done in order to reduce the list of missing people pending for identification. This list is one of the largest in the world, only second to Pol Pot’s Cambodian communist regime. Spain continues to be the second country with more missing people.

According to UN recommendations and its spokesperson Pablo de Greiff, Spain still has work to do on Truth, Justice, Healing and Memory, with the aim of not repeating errors of the past.

In order to give voice to those who continue working on this subject and to highlight their involvement with the historical memory, the Festival has given two awards from the official selection to:

– “Vencidxs”, directed by Aitor Fernández with the Best Feature Film Award. This film is a project composed by more than one hundred interviews to the last survivors of the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent Francoist repression.

– “El camí d’un protocol”, by Carles Seuba and Guillem Escriche, with the Best Short Film Award. A film about the project of creating a NDA bank in order to identify the missing people during the Civil War. Both films will be screened again during the awards ceremony. The Festival will also give the award to a person or entity in recognition of the promotion and protection of Human Rights.

This year the Human Rights Award has been given to the non-profit cooperative of renewable energy “Som Energia”, committed to motivate a change in the current energy model in order to achieve a model 100% renewable and accessible to all.

The Festival also has the support of Amnesty International and collaborates with Survival International, organization working for the rights of indigenous peoples which awards the best film on the subject.

Amnesty International has awarded the film “Camp 72”, by Seema Mathur. According to this organization, the film portraits the use of women as a war weapon in countries under conflict. The film also reveals the lack of access to justice and healing by the victims, due to the recommendations formulated in 2009 by the Liberian Commission of Truth and Reconciliation were hardly put in place.

The Best Film on indigenous theme goes to “Huicholes: The Last Peyote Guardians”, by Hernán Vílchez. The film features the emblematic case of the defense of Wirikuto, the sacred territory of the Huichol ethnic group, against the threat of minin exploitation.

The Festival will also give the International Journalism and Human Rights awards, created to acknowledge collectives or individuals, local or international, under risk due to their work and commitment to the truth and Human Rights. The awards has three categories:

– Voice for Human Rights Award (radio): awarded to the communitarian Colombian broadcasting radio station “Contagio Radio”, born from the necessity of creating a space to promote Human Rights.

– Pencil for Human Rights Award (written press), will be awarded to “AIC (Alternative Information Center)”, Palestinian- Israeli progressive organization which, by fostering information, political involvement and collective work, promotes the joint analysis and search of solutions of justice to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

– Look for Human Rights Award (television, digital, photo, audiovisual) awarded to the Afghan filmmaker Rahmatullah Haidari and his film “Street Wolves”, about the harassment of women in his country, premiered in last year’s edition. Both filmmaker and his family are under threat of Talibans and extremist groups due to his defense of Human Rights in Afghanistan, and are currently seeking political asylum.
